This four-day round trip takes you from Marrakech to the Sahara and back, with many remarkable places on the way: the High Atlas and the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Draa Valley, Rissani and the Sahara at Merzouga, plus the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge and the Amridil Kasbah.
Leaving Marrakech, you cross the High Atlas through the Ounila Valley to Ait Ben Haddou and continue to Ouarzazate for your first night. The second day starts with a visit of Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa Valley through Agdz and Nkob and on via Rissani to Merzouga for a sunset camel ride. On day three you return through Rissani and Erfoud to the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley. On the last day you travel west through the Roses Valley, Skoura and the Amridil Kasbah before crossing the High Atlas back to Marrakech.
Good to know: the Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, one of the stops on this itinerary, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your journey starts with an early pick-up from the airport or your accommodation in Marrakech. You cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with stops to take in the scenery.
Then you continue to the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before driving on to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Approx. 4 hours driving · Overnight: Hotel in Ouarzazate
Following breakfast, you explore Ouarzazate, starting with the Atlas Studios and then the Taourirt Kasbah, an old fortified castle built of mud brick. Then the road leads towards Agdz and into the Draa Valley, beside Morocco’s longest river, with stops at its palm groves, kasbahs and Berber villages. Lunch break in Nkob or Alnif (free time).
After lunch the drive continues via Rissani to the Sahara at Merzouga. At Erg Chebbi you climb onto your camel to cross the desert, stopping on a big dune to watch the sunset. Then it is on to the camp for Berber drums and dancing under a sky full of bright stars. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
About 5.5 hours on the road · Night: Luxury desert camp, Merzouga
Wake up early for sunrise over the dunes, then ride your camel back to Merzouga and set off for Rissani and its large souk (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays).
Next you visit a fossilised-marble workshop in Erfoud, then drive through the Touroug and Tinjdad palm groves to the Todra Gorge, with free time for lunch. The road continues to the Dades Valley via Boumalne Dades, with stops at the “monkey fingers” rock formations and at a valley viewpoint. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.
About 5 hours on the road · Night: Hotel in the Dades Valley
On the last day you drive to Kalaat M’Gouna to discover the Roses Valley. The route passes several kasbahs, including the Amridil Kasbah in the Skoura palm grove. After free time and lunch in Ouarzazate, you cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass and the High Atlas to Marrakech, where we drop you at your accommodation or the airport. Yes. Every tent at the luxury camp is just for you, with its own en-suite bathroom and hot water.
Take only what you need for the ride: the rest of your bags travel in the camp 4×4 and will be ready for you when you arrive at the camp.
Depending on the camp, the camel ride takes from 40 minutes up to about 1.5 hours. If you would rather not ride, a camp 4×4 can drive you and your bags to and from the camp. Quad bikes (ATVs) are also available at an extra cost.
Yes, but plan for roughly 4 to 6 hours of driving per day. Our vehicles are recent and comfortable and we take regular breaks, but if long drives are not for you, a longer itinerary may suit you better, such as our 8-day from Marrakech.
